A trial CCTV scheme could be implemented in Malmesbury during the Christmas and New Year period. Malmesbury Town Council has received a free offer from local company Brio Technology to mount a camera on the hall, overlooking the Cross Hayes car park.
The town council is considering the idea and will make a decision at next Tuesday's full council meeting, in the town hall, at 7pm.
Deputy town clerk Phil Rice said images from the camera would be monitored from the town hall.
He said Brio Technology suggested installing the camera in the town for a trial period, and that the effectiveness of the experiment would help the town council decide if CCTV should be installed in Malmesbury in the future.
Mr Rice said: "A lot of people are in favour of CCTV."
He said the camera could also be helpful to police if there was any trouble around the Cross Hayes area during the holiday period.
Town councillor John Bowen also felt the camera could deter people from causing any trouble during the Christmas season.
The trial project comes after a working group of town councillors decided in July that Malmesbury needs four CCTV cameras.
These cameras would be positioned at Market Cross, High Street, Oxford Street and the Cross Hayes car park, at a cost of around £30,000.
Mr Rice said: "We have sent tenders and we have asked eight or nine companies to give us a price. We have given them a technical specification."
Five companies have responded to the council's invitation, one of which is Brio Technology.
Two types of CCTV technology are being considered which would include either wireless broadband technology or installing cables.
