ABBEY Skate returned to Malmesbury Abbey on Wednesday (Feb 17) as the church was transformed into a unique skatepark.

The Malmesbury Abbey congregation collaborated with Christian Skaters UK for the eighth consecutive year to give hundreds of children a chance to have a go at the sport in the former Benedictine Abbey.

Rev John Monaghan, co-ordinator of Abbey Skate, said: “The idea is to bring a 21st century activity to a 12th century church.

“It’s a very flexible space to do this and an ideal opportunity to show children that the church is a place they can enjoy and to extend God’s love in a unique way, which in turn breaks barriers between children and the church.

“There’s been a really great turnout today. In fact, our biggest problem has been trying to fit everyone in. One lady even asked if we are taking bookings for next year’s event yet.”

Since it began in 2009, Abbey Skate has become one of the premier youth events in the West Country and more than 600 youngsters enjoyed the ramps, quarter pipes, grinding rails and trick boxes last year.

Katrina Robertson, a 10-year-old who attended the festival, said: “I really enjoyed skateboarding in the abbey today.

“I’ve only been on a skateboard a few times before but the team were really helpful which meant I grew in confidence and managed to have a go on the ramps at the end.”

The event runs for three days and culminates with a competitive event on Friday evening, with prizes for the winners donated by various sponsors.

Professional skateboarders and scooterers also take to the abbey during the event to perform demonstrations.
