MAJOR changes are underway at The Wharf Theatre in Devizes that will transform not only the look of the building but the way people book tickets.

Trustees of the theatre by the Kennet & Avon Canal are pushing ahead with a major facelift that will be finished in time for a gala night relaunch on November 3.

In addition to the work that includes redecoration of the bar and foyer, upgrading of toilets, new electrics there is also a complete rebranding to go with the new look.

The theatre has also introduced a new on-line booking system TicketSource. Customers who prefer to book their tickets in person can do so by ringing 03336 663 366.

Wharf Theatre chairman Sarah Williams said: “We have a lot of good feedback from people using the new system, which they find more convenient.

“For those who like to buy their tickets face to face, we are in discussion with an organisation in the town centre and will shortly be announcing the service.

“We are sorry to be losing the services of Devizes Books, our box office for the last 20 years, but they do not have the staff to cope with online booking. But we still enjoy good relations with them.”

The new logo and typeface that will now appear on all artwork is showcased on the theatre's autumn/winter brochure and posters and flyers for the opening production which is Noel Coward's Hay Fever which opens on September 22.

The brochure, now available free of charge from outlets all over town, features on its front page John Challis, Boycie from Only Fools and Horses, who is bringing his one-man show to the Wharf on October 21.

As well as hearing stories from the famous TV series and watching clips from the show, audience members will be able to meet and chat to Mr Challis who will sign copies of his autobiography.

The gala night on November 3 will be the opening night of its second in-house production of the year, Quartet by Ronald Harwood.

The Wharf’s Christmas offering this year is something rather different. Paul Butler, who presented a stunning Hot Mikado a few years ago, is returning to Gilbert and Sullivan with a festive production of Yeomen of the Guard.

Full details of all in-house and visiting productions can be found in the new brochure or online at www.wharftheatre.co.uk
