CHILDREN at By Brook Primary School welcomed high-profile visitors from the community last week as they learnt about British values.

The 192 youngsters at the school, in The Street, Yatton Keynell, took part in a range of activities throughout the week, including a mock vote and having the chance to ask questions to their distinguished guests.

“We’d had a British values week planned for a little while and it coincided with the EU referendum,” said deputy headteacher, Joanne Jardim.

“So we had a school vote. The children went in and we had ballot papers and ballot boxes.

“They learnt about democracy and we tried to get in as many visitors during the week to enhance the learning.

“We had MP James Gray come in and also the police.

“We had Chippenham Mayor Terry Gibson come in to talk about his chains and robes and what he does in the community and how that affects them.

“It was a chance for the children to learn about the different roles and what people do in the community.

“They thoroughly enjoyed it and have got a really deep understanding now whereas if you asked them before they would have only had a partial idea.”
