ALMOST 80 cyclists jumped in the saddle and put their best pedal forward as they took part in the annual Wrong Way Round Bike Ride.

Held for the eighth year, the event began in London before cyclists travelled 97 miles and finished in Yatton Keynell on Sunday (June 12).

Twelve riders took part in the full distance, while shorter routes were organised including a 19-mile route on the lanes around Yatton Keynell for families and children.

Ian Banister, chair of governors at By Brook Valley Primary School and who completed the ride from London for the third year, said: “The organisers put on another great event.

“The arrangements for cycling out of London were first class and it certainly gave the riders the confidence that all is well.

“And when you arrive back in Yatton Keynell local people are around to support you as you begin your recovery.”

A total of £1,000 was raised from the event, which will go towards charities including Yatton Keynell Youth Club, Bybrook Pre-School, St Margaret’s Church remodelling fund, Friends of By Brook Valley School and Yatton Keynell Recreation Association.

Organisers of the event, an informal group of locals called YKE (Yatton Keynell Events), said: “It was a great day, and we raised some funds for local community groups.

“But it's not really about the money. The main aim of the Wrong Way Round Bike Ride is to get everyone from the village together and simply have a good time.

“And thanks to the great support from Yatton Keynell residents and all our guests from further afield, we are proud to say our aim was achieved.”
