ENDLESS of hours of head-spins, stabs, six-steps and power moves have paid off for a posse of Malmesbury students who have come out tops in a regional breakdancing competition.

Malmesbury School’s Breakdancing Boys won The Great Big Dance Off South West Regional finals at the Wyvern Theatre in Swindon, out-stepping and out-spinning dozens of other teams.

Now the sharp moving teenagers will represent the school at the national finals in Birmingham next month.

The troupe are Dan Baines, 16, Josh Curtis, 16, Jem Hedderwick, 16, Ben Eldridge-Lynch, 14 and Marcus Pumphrey, 13.

The team formed during a lunch time dance club and now choreograph their own moves.

When they compete in the UK finals on June 22 it will be an especially poignant performance as it will be the last time the boys will dance together as the group is splitting due to other commitments.

Meanwhile, another Malmesbury School student Josh Pyman, 17, has been awarded first prize in the Two Moors Festival's Young Musicians Platform competition.

In doing so the Year 12 pupil, who plays clarinet, achieved an “exceptionally high standard,” equating to the final round of the BBCs Young Musician of the Year.

Headteacher Tim Gilson said: “Many congratulations to Josh on winning this prestigious prize – it has been such a pleasure listening to him play at concerts and carol services over the years.”
