Chippenham Town Band joined a host of organisations and a couple of thousand people for a ceremony of remembrance at John Coles Park on Sunday.

The Royal British Legion, Sea, Air and Army Cadets, Scouts and local churches were all in attendance to remember the men and women of the British Armed Forces who lost their lives during the conflicts of the First World War.

Chippenham British Legion treasurer and deputy parade marshal, Julie Shore, was grateful for the excellent turnout as the charity raised over £250.

She said: “It went very well, we could not have been luckier with the weather.

“I was so glad we had the sunshine – the weather really does make such a big difference.”

A generous donation from Chippenham Town Council of £300 helped cover the costs of the event.

The event was opened by Chippenham Town Mayor, Coun John Scragg, and there were stalls, and displays for the many visitors to browse including vintage army motorbikes, and crosses being placed in the memorial garden.

Irene Sinclair, chairman of the Chippenham branch of the British Legion said: “It was a lovely day.

“I have had so many positive comments from people.”

“It was a very good, when you plan things you simply don’t know how they are going to be but we were very pleased with the result.”

The local Scout group did an exhibition of World War One scouting and some even wore vintage World War One uniforms.

The Royal British Legion is an Armed Forces charity that participates in social, fundraising and welfare activities.

They provide financial, social and emotional care and support for all members of the British Armed Forces, past and present, and their families.

The charity started its four-year task to build a mile-long pile of 2p coins which would raise several thousand pounds by the centenary of the war’s conclusion in 2018.

The Chippenham Town Band played music during a short Service of Remembrance, and the Sunset Ceremony with a joint air and sea band also performing in between.

The Chippenham British Legion expressed gratitude to all the people who attended including the Chippenham town crier, local churches, Scout groups, Air and Sea Cadets and town band.
