Developers have insisted their revised scheme for the regeneration of a historic Wiltshire brewery site will benefit the town.
In January, altered plans were submitted for the construction of 101 new homes at the old Wadworth brewery complex on Northgate Street in Devizes.
Despite these new plans, many residents and local councillors remain opposed to the designs put forward by developers Backhouse Housing and have voiced fears over several issues.
The firm has provided an update on the key features of the revised proposal, which they believe has addressed many of the concerns raised by the site’s neighbours.
This includes developing a “much-improved relationship” with the Assize Court Trust over fears the project could negatively impact the nearby historic building.
The new plans will also provide residents with a larger public open space and an improved boundary to the main brewery buildings, which will be retained.
Proposed dormer windows overlooking Anstie Court have also been removed to increase privacy for the existing occupants.
Stuart Walter, senior land and planning manager at Backhouse, said: “We have submitted revised proposals for Brewery Wharf, Devizes, following extensive comments from statutory consultees and local stakeholders.
“The revised scheme addresses many of the concerns raised from the original application and brings forward a comprehensive scheme that we agree works well with our neighbours.
“We are continuing dialogue with Wiltshire Council and local stakeholders and will review any further comments received on the revised proposals.”
Backhouse says the materials submitted for the project will ensure the new properties do not detract from the existing brewery or nearby locations like the Assize Court.
But the Assize Court Trust insists the proposed development still has “significant deficiencies”, which they believe could threaten the future of the building by affecting access to the rear.
Devizes Town Council has already objected to the new plans while numerous residents have also claimed the latest scheme is still not suitable.
Town councillors claimed the designs were “poor” and would now be in keeping with the flow of New Park Street.
They also objected due to a lack of affordable housing provision, although Backhouse says a determination on whether any affordable homes will be delivered is yet to be made.
Other locals worry the additional housing will add to traffic congestion at an already busy junction.
The contentious planning row looks set to continue after Wiltshire Council extended their decision deadline until April 24.
