SINCE the recent local elections and the amalgamation of Roundway Parish Council and Devizes Town Council, our town council now consists of 20 councillors: 12 Guardians, six Conservative, one Labour and one Independent.
In recent weeks of political campaigning, both nationally and locally, many people from across the county have asked me “Who are the Guardians?”and I have found it difficult to answer this question.
Some local residents have told me that they vote for the Guardians because they are “not political” and yet the Guardians are a political party, they make decisions on how to vote as a party, and communications to individual councillors are sometimes answered by the leader or deputy leader of the Guardians.
So I would say to these people the only way to get a non-political councillor is to vote for an Independent candidate.
The Guardians themselves claim to represent and protect the interests of the people of Devizes, and to protect, maintain and promote the town of Devizes.
All other Devizes councillors also do this: Conservative, Labour and Independent.
Who are the Guardians, and what are their policies?
