SOME contributors to your letters pages obviously have difficulty in accepting the outcome of the exercise in pure, direct democracy, which took place in the United Kingdom on June 23, 2016. So, here is the result again: Wiltshire: Electorate 366,555; Remain 137,258 (47.51 per cent); Leave 151,637 (52.49 per cent); Majority 14,379.

UK: Electorate 46,500,001; Remain 16,141,241 (48.1 per cent); Leave 17,410,742 (51.9 per cent); Majority 1,269,501.

As for a second referendum, forget it. One of the reasons we are leaving the EU is the withering contempt it has repeatedly displayed towards the expression of the democratic will, either ignoring the results of referenda, or requiring them to be re-run.

Our government now has a clear mandate to get on with the task of renegotiating our relationship with the EU. After they have finished playing musical chairs in Whitehall, there must be no delay or obfuscation in dealing with this issue, which has bedevilled our national politics for the last 50 years.
