I write in reference to your recent coverage concerning a new urgent care facility which is to be provided within the next two years on land adjacent to the NHS Treatment Centre in Marshall Road, Devizes.

Whilst it was flattering to be recognised as one who had a part in this recent positive chapter in the long history of healthcare provision in Devizes, I must point out that this decision was made by a forward-thinking Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), led by local GPs, who have been encouraged by past and current local councillors of all levels, former MP for Devizes Michael Ancram, and our current MP Claire Perry.

The twists and turns of healthcare fortunes in Devizes are well documented; and for the past 30-plus years I, and other former civic leaders of the town, have campaigned tirelessly for our fair share of services to match our community’s changing needs.

We endured financial crises, endless consultation by various incarnations of health authorities and trusts; reconfiguration, reorganisation and restructuring of health services amidst sweeping changes of local and national government.

However, whilst the past has provided the history behind our health service provision, it is the current system under which this latest decision is made, so let us rejoice in the good news, and fully support our CCG with the challenge of delivering this promise within the financial resources available, and encourage it to continue investing in the future needs of our increasing – and increasingly ageing – population. Well done to everyone.
