We have come to expect Peter Slatter taking pot shots at how councils spend money. His latest suggestion is to toss a coin when choosing who to vote for in his summary of those ambitious people who write letters to the Gazette in getting us to vote for them.

He seems to have missed the huge half-page advertisements and now a whole page lodged by the Tory prospective candidate over months, running into thousands of pounds, incredibly claiming credit for various campaigns long started by Liberal Democrats on parking charges and the recommissioning of Corsham Station.

Surely Peter might have questioned someone so profligate on the expense of those adverts week after week as to how responsible on our behalf Ms Donelan would be when facing economic decisions that we all pay for. This includes her barrage of glossy literature.

Ms Donelan has claimed to be pursuing the reduction of parking fees in our town. This is pretty rich when it is her party colleagues and their exclusively Tory Cabinet taking advantage in that stealth tax of car parking charges in our town.

Several options led by the Lib Dem group at County Hall have been rejected long before she appeared in Wiltshire.

In her literature she thanks Lib Dems for supporting her campaign. Ms Donelan recently invited David Cameron and Boris Johnson to Chippenham, proving her to be a London ‘Metrocenric’ career politician whose main experience is in marketing and media.

Where is any mention in her self-promotion of those living in debt and low-paid zero-hours contracts, seeking pay day loans, facing the reality of depending on food banks?

Any acknowledgement that in Chippenham one in three children are living below poverty level? The disgrace of those suffering mental illness? We thank God for bands of volunteers in our community who work for those needing support. This should make us question her on her ability to focus on the needs of those struggling to cope.

An intelligent community will not need to toss coins when deciding who to vote for and know who in the coalition were the ones to bring help to the many who are casualties of corporate greed.

Mary Fallon, Chippenham town councillor.
