Perhaps the old song requires a 2014/2015 tax year type makeover to read: ‘It’s the rich that gets the pleasure, and the elderly that get the blame’.

For there is very little point in our local government MP going on and on in your columns saying how well they are doing when tax figures show that is incorrect.

Even in the Chancellor’s very recent Autumn Statement (sorry was that not a little sly budget?), which clearly gives the top rate taxpayers yet another increase in their Personal Tax Allowance to offset their higher tax band, but the elderly pensioners get theirs still frozen for the past three years. How is that fair on elderly Cold War veterans such as myself, I have to ask her?

Can we really be accused of being ‘cynical’ in thinking it is just another way of starting to reclaim part of the Winter Fuel Allowance from them without anyone noticing? Sorry, Mrs P, it is all obviously just smoke and mirrors again, and certainly not a silver vote winner in your area for sure.

Mr Nev Cooper,
Bottlesford.
