In her nice letter to the Gazette recently, Mrs Gummer said that she had never heard of Orange Grove or Phillips Court, places that I’d mentioned in a previous letter about New Park Street.

Well, she’s not alone. No end of people have stopped me in the town to say they’d never heard of them either.

Of course, Orange Grove and Phillips Court were two charming red-brick terraces leading off New Park Street, midway between the White Hart pub and Harry Hockley’s bakery, that I knew well as a boy, where my pal Teddy Horsman lived in Phillips Court and my life-long friend Gerry Gibb’s grandad lived in Orange Grove.

Alas, another part of old Devizes gone forever.

Robert Hayter, Chantry Court, Devizes.

PS: Even the nice lady from Devizes who types up the letters for the Letters page had never heard of them either.
