After reading last week’s Gazette & Herald, it has become apparent that we now have open season for developers in Wiltshire.

It seems that they can do anything they like, as long as it includes lots of houses, and we are powerless to stop them.

I am told this is because there is no Core Strategy in place and most Neighbourhood Plans are still in their infancy.

This all reminds me of the 1960s and 1970s, when Georgian artisan terraced houses were demolished in their hundreds, because they were “only” listed as Grade II, so were not considered to be of any architectural or historic value.

The beautiful countryside around Chippenham and Calne is now suffering because it is not Conservation Area, Area of Outstanding Beauty or World Heritage Site, like Avebury, Stonehenge and large areas of rural Wiltshire.

The result being that it is not regarded as being of any importance.

In years to come our ancestors will condemn us for our wanton destruction of the glorious Wiltshire countryside.

Our generation will be held responsible for the terrible desecration of many miles of green and pleasant land, as we hold those 1960s councils and developers responsible for destroying so much of our heritage to build modern boxes, many of which have already been demolished.
