In response to last week’s letter from Mr Bob Pawsey it is appropriate to point out that visitors to Marlborough for the Jazz Festival will be able to enjoy the new surface on the High Street, which was resurfaced earlier this year at a cost of about £500,000.
The damage to the A4 west of Marlborough is delamination of the surface caused by the underground water pressure from the neighbouring Marlborough Downs, all of which occurred in January and February of this year. This stretch of the A4 has been examined and, although unsightly, is not dangerous and has been added to the normal repair programme. As part of the £52 million additional funding for road improvements agreed by Wiltshire Council we have extensive works programmed for September on the A4, although we are in discussions to bring that forward. Wiltshire Council maintains 2,789 miles of highway; West Berkshire maintains just 838 miles.
Philip Whitehead, Portfolio holder for highways, Wiltshire Council.
