I just wanted to write to say how nice it was to see the circus come to Calne. I have heard many wonderful comments from adults and children alike.

We are very lucky to have so many events taking place in our town throughout the year. Our town is full to bursting for the Christmas lantern parade and full of life at the Summer Festival, Bike Meet, Food & Drink Festival and Calne Fest.

These events are a credit to the people who organise them and the many people who support them.

So how sad I was to hear that a very few people took it upon themselves to arrange a mini protest.

We, the residents, received a letter asking us, very nicely, if we could keep Mill Street and Anchor Road clear on the Sunday morning as the circus was due to arrive.

Of course, being grown-ups, we all complied, bar a few residents in Mill Street, who took it upon themselves to be as awkward as possible, and I am sure caused undue stress for the circus, who had they not been hindered, would have had a clear run into Hillcroft.

One of their arguments, I believe, was that the circus should have gone to Beversbrook. Beversbrook is a superb venue and very much needed for Calne, but I am old enough to remember when many events were held in the recreation ground and Hillcroft (the next field).

Jennings Funfair came regularly and, yes, sometimes had a few problems with cars (granted there were not that many around back then) but I can honestly say I cannot remember anything on a scale of the scenes from that Sunday morning.

I was born in Anchor Road and have lived here most of my life. I was so pleased to hear that when asked, the residents of Anchor Road complied without question.

On one final note, I would like to say to the circus: “Please come again and do not let the actions of a very small minority override the pleasure you gave to so many.”
