In his attempt to defend the current planning shambles in Chippenham, Coun Hutton (Gazette, March 20) misleads your readers by saying that I opposed the development of Langley Park. This is not correct, as he knows.

I welcome the redevelopment of that rundown area, but at the same time argued that more attention needed to be given to the concerns of the residents living nearby. This was ignored by the planning committee.

They also ignored my request that more be required from the developers to help the town centre cope with the extra traffic that will be generated by the supermarket at the Little George roundabout and the surrounding roads.

Redevelopment yes, but not irresponsible acceptance of developers’ proposals without any attention to those kinds of issues. The planning committee, of which Coun Hutton is a leading member, has powers which it is unfortunately not using in the best interests of residents and Chippenham town centre.

Coun Chris Caswill, Chippenham Monkton ward.
