SWINDON TOWN: Di Canio wards off Bodin suitors

PAOLO Di Canio has ruled out Billy Bodin leaving the club again on loan this season, and instead suggested that the young forward will be offered a new contract at Swindon.

The Wales Under-21 international scored his first-ever Town goal on Tuesday night in the 4-1 win over Southend and could be given the nod to start alongside Paul Benson in today’s game against Burton.

Earlier this week, Torquay boss Martin Ling said he would make one final call to see if he could take Bodin back to Plainmoor on loan for the remainder of the season.

But Di Canio has ruled that out and instead slapped a £250,000 price tag on Bodin to deter any potential suitors.

“They had their chance but now every club who asks about our players will have to spend money,” he told the Advertiser. “Billy Bodin will stay here, he has done well for us.

“If another club comes with a piece of paper asking for a loan, but then give us £250,000 at the end of the season, then we can consider this. Otherwise we do not give a gift to anyone.

“Billy will be with us until the end of the season.”

Bodin’s long-term future, however, is still up in the air, with his contract due to expire at the end of the campaign.

However, Di Canio is open to offering Bodin a new deal, should the Swindon youth team product want to accept it.

“Obviously we will have to consider this situation,” he added.

“We will not let him go free or maybe we will try to keep him here with a new contract if he will accept it and wants to stay.

“Even if Billy decides he wants to leave then he needs to do everything to help us to go up until the end of the season.

“If we go up and he becomes free and he doesn’t want to accept our contract then we will lose the player, but it is better for that to happen than give the player to a real contender to go up.”

what a change one week makes, last week could go for 60k to enable other players to come in, this week a 250k player. If I was Billy I wouldnt sign any new contract and keep my options open until the end of the season when any fee could go in his back pocket and not the clubs

I can't understand the 250k if he don't sign a contract he is free to leave. So surely he is in a win win position?
I suppose if he don't sign it he will be playing upfront with kerrouche by themselves
Onwards and upwards and got to get to a very important game today ( I hope)

Who says he would have gone for £60k?
.
PdC had always said if Billy wanted to go and a club made a good good offer then we would consider it
.
I always felt £250k was that amount and now we have it in black and white!
.
Bodin can not walk for free as under 24 - as long as we offer him a deal equal to what he is on a tribunal will set the compensation level due
.
To be honest I think this talk of his future up in the air is nonsense - it is only up in the air if HE wants to go
.
HE made the decision to stay and I expect HIM to sign a new deal once offered one
.
I understand his initial frustration at wanting to play more - but now think he realise it is better to be a squad player at us and still play 25-30 a year than maybe more at another club not at out level

Billy has always said he didn't want to leave as he loves the club so hopefully signing a new contract is just a formality once it is offered to him.

Omg, talk about blow your own trumpet... 250k. The lad scored 1 goal so dicanio saw potential andhas changed his mind on him.. Should have had more faith in him and played him like torquay did who were also same league. In future ask mystic red for Swindon predictions, Gary rose move over......

Bodin has the potential to be a top player and should be kept here to progress. Im sure he will get better and better and can play striker or wide so valuable to have on board. Give the lad a contract to make him feel wanted and see the difference.
