CHIPPENHAM hosted Devizes RFC in perfect conditions in their Wiltshire Cup game on Sunday morning.

Chippenham took an early lead after they turned over a strong scrum on the halfway line.

Number eight Hurring picked up and shipped the ball and Mackenzie made a good break, timing his offload well to Graham on the right wing, who evaded several tackles to run in from 10 metres.

Waters’ conversion fell just short.

The following passage of play was scrappy with both teams squandering possession in some sloppy rucks.

It was Chippenham who finally broke out from a ruck in midfield.

Left wing Turek made ground, with Alcorn in good support, to take the ball on when he was tackled.

Hurring was quick to pick up and weave his way to the line for a 10-0 lead after the first five minutes.

Devizes came back at Chippenham after the restart and poor tackling saw a one-on-one against the dependable full-back Davies, who duly felled his man with a try-saving tackle.

However, Devizes rarely threatened again and Chippenham extended their lead when patient play applied pressure down the right flank with Mackenzie popping the ball to Graham who almost made the line.

Hurring was again on hand to pick up and touch down.

Shortly after Chippenham were reduced to 14 men after scrum-half Alcorn was sinbinned for what was deemed to be unfair use of the boot.

Devizes slotted the ball into the corner but their chance came to nought as Chippenham re-secured possession and Mackenzie cleared well upfield.

A scrum on halfway led to the fourth try. Hurring picked up and took off on a typically evasive run, being forced wide by the covering defence.

His well-timed looping offload infield found Waters to complete with a try in the corner, which he was unlucky not to convert.

Hurring again was instrumental in the next try which came just before half time, when he peeled off the back of a ruck and made good ground to offload to Graham on the right.

Graham was felled just short of the line but popped the ball to Logut who scored.

After the break Chippenham were back to full strength and, with several substitutions, it was not long before the lead increased.

Waters took the ball well on the 22 and made a determined run, evading several tackles, to touch down and convert.

Another quickly followed with Hurring and Broom combining well, and Logut finishing off.

The visitors’ lack of confidence was all too evident when they put in a poor crossfield kick when in a good attacking position.

Graham, close to his 22, took the ball and countered down the right wing before being tackled on the 22, but his offload found Gaunt in close support who rounded it off under the posts. Waters slotted the conversion.

Chippenham rounded off the game with a nice try, exploiting space created out wide when Hurring and Waddington combined well, before Coker took the ball on.

Waddington stepped back in when he was tackled and collected the ball off the floor and dived over.
