CALNE are focused on establishing a solid base as they seek to go one better in Dorset & Wilts Two North this season.

The Anchor Road men finished as runners-up to runaway league champions Pewsey Vale last term but, led by skipper Tom Morten, believes they are in good shape having not been beaten since January.

In addition, with players returning to the fold and new faces introduced, the club hope to re-establish a second team as the season progresses, while chairman Chris Austin and his committee have worked tirelessly to help the club prosper, with a big focus on the junior section and vice presidents.

Coach Alan Wicks said: “We have had a great response from the core of regular players and the number of players attending training over the summer has been good, we just need to keep these players and attract new ones.

“Everyone has their own rugby ambitions but ultimately, we play for our mates and for the love of the sport.

“This is why I have always been a Calne player and now player/coach.’’ Calne, who kick off at Sutton Benger on Saturday, also have Bevirs Solicitors, Calne Lions Club, HJS Recovery and ecopow on board as sponsors and Austin is upbeat.

“We really do have a great group of people at this club,’’ he added. “We hope to be in a position to have a 2nd XV before Christmas and we will need to continue to develop all areas of the club.

“Our aim for this season is to continue to grow our squad, offer playing opportunities and have fun with a great group of people.’’
