RUDLOE-BASED Bath & Wiltshire Romans are on the march after making a successful start to their season.

The side, based at Leafy Lane playing fields, have embarked on their first season in the West of England League, with Army captain and Combined Services international Tom Howley leading them as player-coach.

University of Bath coach Rob Cryer has also been assisting and the Romans opened their competitive campaign with a 58-24 success over Swindon St George.

Cheltenham Phoenix were then seen off 50-18, leaving them top of the table alongside Bristol Sonics, with whom they are scheduled to meet.

Leading 28-0 at half-time, the Romans scored 10 tries on route to victory, Paul Riley impressing on his debut at stand-off, while Mike Roberts was rewarded for good forward play with the coaches’ man of the match.

Combined Services International Mike Harrison has been one of the standout players, while Tom Plance joined from the University of Bath and several players have joined from Trowbridge’s rugby union club.

Club official Chris Chatten said: “We are keen to continue to recruit players from across the Wiltshire and Bath area giving them an opportunity to experience the game.’’ The Romans, who host Somerset Vikings next weekend, are keen to recruit players aged 16+ of all abilities.
