DEVIZES are looking to end their season with a bang after falling to a 28-12 defeat to Wiltshire rivals Swindon.

Devizes travelled to Wiltshire rivals Swindon on Saturday, desperate to put a shine on a disappointing season for the club and it started well.

Devizes, with the wind behind them, got the first score when Jorge Wadman went over, with Andy Thompson adding the extras.

Swindon came back strong and it wasn’t long before Tom Mannion bundled over the line from close range before taking the lead just before the break when former Saddleback prop Nathan Seymour crashed over.

After a few sustained attacks on the Devizes try line, it was prop Ben Riley who bundled over and then shortly after Swindon extended their lead to obtain a bonus point win with a fourth try from winger Mark Chatwin.

The visitors got a late try back through James Grainger but head coach Stuart Haddon said the best side on the day won.

“It was a tough game and we competed very well in the first half,” he said.

“They had the better of us in the scrummage, line-outs were quite equal.

“We turned around in the second half and we were against the wind and in the first 20 minutes we were struggling a little bit.

“We had a few missed tackles and when we had the ball we weren’t penetrating enough.

“We came back at the end and looked pretty good in the last 15 or 20 minutes but on the whole they deserved to win the game.”

Devizes play their final match of the season on Saturday, facing promotion playoff side Towcestrians, who defeated Chippenham 10-8 last weekend, and Haddon is hoping for a big end to the campaign.

“We’ve got Towcester next weekend, and I think they beat Chippenham last weekend but we are going to give it our best shot and go out with a bang,” he added.

“At the end of the day I have said to the lads that we know we are going down but we want those teams in that division looking at our results.

“When we get out there, we are not going to let them walk all over us, we are going to give it our best shot.”
