ROYAL Wootton Bassett head coach Alan Low hailed his side’s win over Aylesbury at the weekend as the best team performance of the campaign.

The Ballard’s Ash side went into the match against the Buckinghamshire outfit looking to avenge last year’s 87-8 humbling.

And Saturday’s 16-5 in Southern Counties North saw Bassett jump into fourth place in the table leapfrogging their visitors.

Dave Hogg gave the hosts the lead with an early penalty and Bassett built on that kick midway through the first half as winger Hamish Keith touched down – Hogg kicked the conversion to make it 10-0.

Aylesbury pulled an unconverted try back before the interval but then Bassett took control in the second period but only had two Hogg penalties to show for their efforts.

“We never looked like conceding the second half,” Low said.

“We defended really well at the weekend.

“But so did they, we were held up over the line three times.”

Before the game with Aylesbury, Low was keen for his side to start showing what they are capable of against the teams flying high in the division.

On several occasions this term Bassett have gone close to claiming one of the top team scalps only to lose it late on.

“We spoke before the game about closing games out and that is what we did against Aylesbury,” he said.

“Before the season started, and from what we had seen elsewhere, I felt that Aylesbury were one of the favourites for the league.

“We also owed them one from last season after the beating they gave us.

“We put in a great team performance on Saturday – it was probably our best of the campaign.”
