WHEN playing chip shots from around the green, using a club with a lot of loft is not always the best choice.
A club with lots of loft, such as a sand wedge or a lob wedge, is designed to hit the ball high with little amounts of roll.
Using this around the green to chip with can be counterproductive.
You will need to use a longer swing with these clubs and with that your margin for error gets smaller.
So next time you are close to the green and looking to chip, try using a club with less loft like an 8 iron or 7 iron.
These clubs and a smaller swing will produce a lower shot that will run out along the green for you.
You should choose the position where you would like to land the ball then work out how much roll you need to achieve to get the ball to the hole.
This will give you an idea of the club that you need to use to play the shot.
If you need a lot of roll then a lower lofted club in necessary such as a 6 iron.
If you need less roll then a 9 iron may work better for you.
The best piece of advice would be to try a number of different clubs around the green to see what works best for you.
