WILTSHIRE’S county golf squads are seeking an influx of new talent in time for next season.

The three main squad headings within the junior golf programme are the Elite Squad, Performance Squad and the Development Squad and there are also four separate age groups in each squad, U18 - the current national champions - U16, U14 and U12, with the latter age group new for 2017.

There is also a squad for girls.

Whatever a player’s handicap from scratch to high handicap or even no handicap, if he is a member of a golf club affiliated to the Wiltshire County Golf Union there is potentially a place for him on the county junior golf programme.

There are squad managers for each age group. The managers, along with the county junior organiser Ian Welding, closely monitor player performance and progression, with PGA professional coaches assigned to each squad to offer help and advice to players if requested.

There is also a comprehensive coaching programme involving PGA qualified professionals under the supervision of John Jacobs, the county junior head coach.

Players to have come through the Wiltshire county junior golf system in past years include multiple European Tour and Ryder Cup winner David Howell, Walker Cup star Jordan Smith, who is set to join the European Tour in 2017, England international Ben Stow and England A squad international Ben Amor.
