BOWOOD’S Nick Brennan will achieve one of his long-term career aims later this year after being selected to represent Great Britain & Ireland in the club professionals’ version of the Ryder Cup.

The 30-year-old, who lives in Chippenham and is a club pro at Bowood, has qualified for the home team to take on the USA for the PGA Cup in September after finishing joint fourth at the Glenmuir PGA Championship at Slaley Hall, in Northumberland, on June 14.

The PGA Cup takes place every two years and the 26th edition will be played back at Slaley Hall on September 20-22.

“It was always something of a career goal but that was always something to aim for in four or six years’ time – I didn’t think that I’d make the team this soon,” said Brennan.

“Qualification happens over two years and I didn’t pick up many points last year but this year counted double.

“On the back nine during the Glenmuir, I had three silly bogies and said to myself that I had to birdie the last hole to get to level par – doing that ended up getting me a place on the team.

“There are only ten people in the team and I’m pretty honoured to get there.

“I’m the only representative from the West region and I’m also the only one that’s Irish because my parents are from there.

“I was actually born in Holland but I’ve been in Chippenham and played at Bowood for six-and-a-half years and I’ve played at a higher level a few times but with limited success.

“I’ve played at three or four challenge tour events and made the cut once but this will definitely be the biggest thing that I’ve done.

“I’m really excited about the PGA Cup and hopefully, I can hold my own there.”

Brennan was one of a number of Wiltshire professionals contesting the two-day Microsoft Services Masters at Bowood, which concluded on Thursday.
