BLUEBIRDS utility man Luke Gullick is dreaming of playing in the 2010 World Cup as he prepares to fly out for a trial with Trinidad and Tobago.

The 22-year-old jets off to the West Indies on Tuesday and will be out there for four weeks as he attempts to impress national team boss Russell Latapy.

“My mum’s family all come from Trinidad and my cousin Aleem is a director at one of their professional teams,’’ he said.

“A little while ago we were joking about trying to get me a trial out there but my dad made a few phone calls and enquiries and I have.

“My teammates have all been joking around about me maybe playing in the World Cup next year.

“I never thought I’d get a chance like this but it’s the chance of a lifetime.”

Gullick will spend four weeks with professional club Clico San Juan Jabloteh FC in Trinidad where he will train twice a day.

At the end of the period there will be a national team get-together where the national boss will run his eye over the trialists and invite those chosen to be part of their final two World Cup qualifying preparations.

Gulick has previously been at Southampton and Bristol Rovers and has played alongside Martin Cranie and Lloyd James, who have represented England and Wales respectively at U21 level.

The Gloucester University student will be part of Town’s squad for Saturday’s trip to Cambridge but could miss up to five games after that.

“I’ll be playing and training every day so I’ll come back in good shape,” he said.

“Hopefully the boys can keep the good run we’re on going while I’m away.
