SWINDON Town duo Nathan Thompson and Jonathan Obika have returned to training this week as they fight to prove their fitness ahead of Saturday’s game with Peterborough United.

First-team coach Ross Embleton has confirmed that Obika, who missed last weekend’s trip to Bolton Wanderers with a hamstring injury, returned to training on Monday but sat out yesterday’s session as they ease the forward back into action.

Meanwhile, Town skipper Thompson joined in with training yesterday having not featured in a matchday squad since hobbling off in the first half of the away trip to MK Dons at the end of December.

Embleton admits it is too early to say at this stage whether the pair will be in contention for Saturday’s game against the Posh at the County Ground as they evaluate how their bodies respond to a return to action.

“Nathan was in training on Tuesday. It will be a case of, the actual injury Nathan has got, assessing how he comes through the session,” he said.

“Jon trained on Monday and wasn’t in the session on Tuesday, so it is a case of seeing where Jon is after experiencing training and seeing what impact that has had on his injury or state of fitness.”

Meanwhile, Conor Thomas could remain at right-back this weekend after debutising in that role at the Macron Stadium.

Bradley Barry remains sidelined with an ankle injury, sustained during the home game with Shrewsbury Town 11 days ago, while Brandon Ormonde-Ottewill is also suffering with an ankle problem, having not featured since Town’s home game with Fleetwood Town on December 17.

Teenage midfielder Ellis Iandolo is back running again but Embleton is unsure if anybody will be back from the treatment room in time for the weekend.

“Bradley Barry has experienced some frustration around his injury. He is not in a great deal of pain any more but the swelling around that area is causing concern so he is still out of the group,” he added.

“Ellis Iandolo is doing more running and improving his fitness, he has been out for an extended period now, as has Brandon (Ormonde-Ottewill).

“There is no one who is knocking down the door to be involved again yet. Obviously, off the back of Tuesday’s training, we’ll know a little bit more about how close Jon and Nathan are for the weekend.”
