WITH a long break between games it has given Town boss Mark Cooper and assistant Luke Williams plenty of time to iron the creases from last week’s defeat at Plymouth Argyle.

One player who is testament to the benefits of dedicated time working on their game is Michael Smith, who had a big impact last Tuesday, coming off the bench to score a penalty and giving renewed impetus to Town’s play.

The eight-goal striker worked hard at the different aspects of his game over the summer and since the new season began Smith’s link-up play has improved significantly.

A beneficiary of that has been Nathan Byrne, who Smith played in for Town’s second goal at Leyton Orient in the last league game.

The wing-back has certainly seen a development in Smith and is enjoying playing alongside the Geordie striker.

“I think Smudge (Smith) has always been great,” said Byrne. “He got a hard time from the fans when he first came.

“I think the lads knew, the gaffer knew, he’s a top quality striker. His link-up play is only getting better, his finishing is only getting better.

“Like I said we’re all still young boys and I think it is great playing with him.

“He makes runs for me and we’ve got a great understanding as well. I think he’s getting better and better every game and it’s good to see him scoring goals.”
