MARLBOROUGH athlete Thomas Holmes is aiming to make his mark in the javelin by attending an international training camp in Finland this summer.

Last year, as an U13 boy, Holmes smashed the county championship record with a throw of 33.38m, earning him an invite to train with nationally-renowned Andover-based javelin specialist Mark Bradford.

The Marlborough & District Junior Athletics club member ended the season ranked number eight in his age group in the country, with a personal best of 37.92m and, during the winter, worked with national javelin coach David Parker at Loughborough University and former world champion Kimmo Kinnunen.

He has now been invited to attend a training camp, run by Kinnunen in Finland, this summer.

Holmes took his first win as an U15 for MADJA at the opening Wessex League event of the season at Basingstoke on Sunday, throwing the heavier 600g javelin 34.79m and will target the Wiltshire Championships at Swindon on May 14.
