BARBURY Castle stages its first point to point meeting of the new season on Sunday.

The going is expected to be good for the Point to Point Owners Association meeting, with the event being held in aid of the Injured Jockeys Fund, which celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of its founding by Lord Oaksey.

Racing gets under way at 11am with a charity flat race, which has attracted several former riders, including ex-champion riders, Tim Mitchell and Polly Walker (nee Gundry).

The remaining six steeplechases have attracted entries from all over the country and the opener, the Intermediate race, looks made for Welsh challenger Overafrica, who improved over the course of last season, ending with a convincing win in a valuable race at Tabley.

The Maiden Race for mares looks a trickier contest, but Emily-Jane Harbour's Midnight Sizzler shaped well last season, and Velvet Cloud was third in a Worcester bumper and comes from a good stable.

The Ladies Open Race looks a cracking contest, with the return of the veteran That's Rhythm, who won the Aga ladies Championship Final at Stratford in 2013.

He has been a wonderful servant to the Fuller family, whose company sponsors Barbury racecourse, and Page Fuller will again take the ride.

The Mens Open has 24 entries, among them, Quinz, who won the valuable Racing Post Steeplechase at Kempton Park in 2011, and is now trained by Alan Hill, one of the country's top point to point trainers.

Another fancied runnes will be Hawkeye Native, who won a couple of hunter chases in 2013, and has since changed stables.

The biggest entry of the day is The Novice Riders Race which sees the point to point debut of Pateese, who has good form under National Hunt rules, and course winner Cottage Oak could come down from Joe O'Shea's Cheshire yard.

The last race of the day is the Maiden for young horses, with unraced Kelsey favourite for trainer Tom Lacey.

Eleven jockeys will take part in the charity race, with former lady point-to-point champion Walker riding Unconvential, trained by her husband Ed Walker.

Having not ridden in a race for six years, Wantage’s Clare Hazel has been getting fit by riding out for top racing trainer Nicky Henderson and will ride Fourovakind, who was bred by her family and hand-reared as a foal by husband and trainer Matt Hazel.

Tik Saunders, daughter-in-law of Grand National winning rider Dick Saunders has also been in training for the charity race while awarding the prizes for the charity race will be para dressage rider Ed Chanin and Wayne Burton, both who have benefited from the IJF and its Oaksey House facility following serious riding accidents.

A silent auction will feature at the raceday with prizes up for grabs including hospitality in a private box for ten people at Wincanton Races, a visit to the historic Jockey Club rooms at Newmarket and a morning on the gallops with Barbury’s resident jumps trainer Alan King.

Admission to Barbury on Sunday is £10 per head, with children free.
