PROMOTED Devizes made a winning start to their Davis Wood League Conference North campaign as they claimed a 3-2 win over Firebrands A.

A high-tempo start saw Devizes open the scoring when Ollie Smith was allowed too much space and ran into the circle to tuck the ball in the corner.

Firebrands were soon level with a well-worked short corner, but the goal of the game was scored by Devizes.

Josh Bond and Callum Lavens combined down the left for the ball to be pulled back to Dan Smith who tapped home.

Once more, Firebrands created chances and Devizes’ defence was shaky at times leading to the second equaliser.

The game was even through the second half but Devizes scraped in front from a Roger Edwards deflection.

In the final minutes, Firebrands broke quickly and won a penalty flick but John Rheinberg stayed tall and saved the flick to preserve the three points for the home side.

Marlborough's Central One campaign also got off to a successful opening with a 3-1 win at home to Team Bath Buccs C.

The hosts, relegated last season, started the game in dominant fashion, showing excellent discipline with their defensive presence stifling the opposition.

Marlborough were very much in the ascendancy but conceded a goal completely against the run of play.

However they resumed their disciplined play immediately and the pressure told when they were awarded a penalty flick, duly dispatched by Anil Sud.

Marlborough worked tirelessly as a cohesive unit in the second half and, midway through, took the lead after a show of blistering pace by Will Hughes to reach a speculative long pass.

Hughes’ control and precision pass across the D allowed young forward Will Radnedge to slot home his first goal for the first team.

The result was finally put to rest when Sud scored his second, this time from a short corner routine, with Hughes named the T H White man of the match.

Mark Knight scored four goals in ten-goal thriller to earn Chippenham a point on the opening day of the season against Yeovil and Sherborne, also in Central One.

Down by two goals quickly, Chippenham fought back to lead 5-4 with time running out but couldn’t hold on, Chris Instone scoring their other goal.

Chippenham A were 3-0 winners over City of Bath C in East Central One, Darren Hillier with his first league goals and Oliver Pugh the men on target.
