DEVIZES Town manager Darran Walters was chuffed to see his side recover from a miserable thumping at Cheddar on Saturday by returning to claiming more derby spoils on Tuesday night.

Last weekend, after going unbeaten through their first two games of the season, which were clashes with local rivals Chippenham Park and Warminster Town, the Nursteed Road outfit were handed a rude awakening as they were thrashed 5-0 at Cheddar.

But on Tuesday, boss Walters got the reaction he was looking for as Devizes dispatched Calne Town 2-0, with Ali Bradley opening the scoring early in the second period.

Goalkeeper Adam Walters made a vital stop to prevent the Lilywhites from levelling late in the game and then at the death, Angus Webster was felled in the area to allow Luke Enderby to wrap things up from the penalty spot.

“On Saturday, we had a really poor second half but when we turned up on Tuesday, I said to the lads that they needed to forget about that game and they did,” said the Devizes chief.

“We are going to come unstuck against the top sides sometimes but we need to concentrate on the home matches that are winnable and we thought that this was one of them.

“I always thought that whoever scored first would go on to win it and we defended really well before getting a goal not long into the second half.

“We’ve got another winnable game next weekend (a home game against Bishop Sutton) and we’ll be after three points again.”

On Saturday, Devizes conceded five times in the second half at Cheddar and also had Jordon Mattews sent off for two bookable offences.

Meanwhile, Calne were beaten 4-1 at home by Wellington, with Mark Dolman hitting their consolation effort.

Elsewhere, Malmesbury Victoria were also in action on Tuesday and they continued their fine start to life in the Toolstation League First Division with a 3-0 win over Keynsham Town, Jamie Packer hitting a brace whilst Shane Bumphrey came off the bench to get his name on the scoresheet.

That result followed up a 6-0 triumph over Welton Rovers for the Vics on Saturday.

Sam Parker starred at the Flying Monk Ground as he hit a hat-trick, whilst Dan Cole and Lee Fernandez were also on target for the rampant hosts, who also saw Welton concede an own goal.

After draws from their first two games, Chippenham Park claimed their first victory in style on Saturday with a 5-1 win on the road at Almondsbury UWE.

Alex Hillier found the net three times, whilst Dan Sibley and Ryan Campbell also struck as Nick Maggs’ side claimed all three points in emphatic style.

Corsham Town were due to travel to Warminster last night but on Saturday, they suffered disappointment at home as they were edged out 1-0 by Portishead Town, with Adam Shipman receiving his marching orders for two bookings.

  • ON SATURDAY, Royal Wootton Bassett Town recorded their first win of the Hellenic League Premier Division season in a 3-1 success at Henley Town, who ended the game with eight men.

TJ Bohane, Sam Packer and Steve Robertson got the goals for Paul Braithwaite’s side against a bad-tempered Henley, who had Jordan Goddard, Ben Backwell and Bradley Hoy sent off.

Bassett were due to take on Thame United last night.

In the Sydenhams League, Pewsey Vale lost 2-0 at Downton on Tuesday night but drew 1-1 with New Milton Town on Saturday, Joe Benfield notching.
