DEVIZES Town manager Darran Walters is hoping his young guns will be able to improve on last season’s performance.

Town only managed to finish 19th out of 21 teams in the Toolstation League First Division last season but despite the absence of a host of new faces - re-signing striker Jake Walters being the only addition - Walters has the luxury that none of his players has left either.

The manager is looking for an improvement on last season and wants his men to aim for a mid-table finish in this year’s campaign.

“We are hoping to be around the mid-table mark to be honest,'' he said. "We finished well last season and they were an inexperienced bunch but they had the last part of the season to get on with.

“We have a young side but they have now had a season of experience for learning and we are in a better position than we were last year.”

The manager has taken encouragement from his side’s form towards the end of last year, with Devizes gaining four wins and a draw in their last eight games.

He said: “Last season for many of them was their first in the league and it was all new to them, it won’t be like that this year.

“I think it will be quite close this year. Everyone there will obviously be the top three or four who are chucking money at it, but the rest of us will be there, we would be happy.”

Town kick off their league campaign when they host Chippenham Park on Saturday (3pm).
