AS THE final whistle echoed around the Bescot Stadium on Tuesday it not only confirmed Town’s well earned point, but Swindon can virtually look forward to life in League One next season.

With the current campaign coming to an end in three weeks, thoughts move onto how the squad will be built by chairman Lee Power, sporting director Seamus Brady, and chief scout Sam Jewell during the summer.

These men are in charge of building a squad capable of challenging for promotion next season, but will they again concentrate on loan players and free transfers?

Or will they invest money into the squad and give it the backbone it desperately needs?

We’ve seen in the past Power is willing to invest by signing Nathan Byrne, Massimo Luongo, Michael Smith and Jonathan Obika, for a reported total £1million.

However, it is believed the chairman has recouped nearly £5.5million through the sales of Louis Thompson, Ben Gladwin, Byrne and Luongo.

After a near 18 months of very little transfer outlay, the club spent £50,000 on bringing in Jordan Stewart, it’s time the chairman focused on bringing in at least a centre back, a wing back and central midfielder who are 25 or older and understand League One football.

I’m not saying we shouldn’t sign a few loan players, bringing in talented prospects from Premier League sides makes sense for both parties, but we shouldn’t build and rely completely on a squad rented from another club.

Power has hinted on more than one occasion he’s a big fan of Lawrence Vigouroux, so it wouldn’t surprise me to see him signed on a permanent deal.

If we want to be competitive, buying just one player and crossing our fingers on 18-year-old loanees being good enough isn’t going to achieve a top-six spot.

Colchester Utd were all but relegated on Tuesday evening, and in their ranks is the very talented George Moncur, a superb player, who almost certainly won’t be playing in League Two next season.

I’m sure quite a few clubs will be interested in signing the Swindon-born midfielder, and maybe he sees himself moving to the Championship, but that shouldn’t deter Town making a proper bid for him.
