CORSHAM Town need to improve their performances says Jeff Roberts despite a 2-1 win over Devizes Town on Boxing Day.

Sam Ockwell opened the scoring for the visitors in the first half with an acrobatic effort, before debutant Jordan Matthews hauled the struggling hosts back level with a free-kick before the break.

Matthew Jenkins’ header restored Corsham’s lead in the second half and that proved enough to secure the three points for Roberts’ side.

“Our performance wasn’t very good and the conditions didn’t really help both sides,” he said.

“A derby game is always going to be hard but on the day it just looked like two bad sides.

“We went 1-0 up with a good over-head kick from Sammy Ockwell and then we have given away a sloppy goal before the break.

“It was a very scrappy game for the full 90 minutes and at the end of the day we were just glad to get it over with and take the three points.

“We haven’t won in the league for a bit so it was nice to get the win and keep in that pack (at the top) a little bit.

“January now is going to be a hard month with us playing Cheddar, Chard and Hengrove, but we have shown that we can hold our own on our day.

“At the moment we just need a couple more experienced players with the younger lads.

“This week we have put three seven day approaches to a few clubs so we will see if we can get a few players in.”

The defeat was the sixth on the bounce for Darran Walters’ side and he is hoping they can turn their form around quickly.

“I know we lost but it was a tight game and I think we deserved something from the game,” he said.

“You have just got to take heart out of the performance.

“After the week before where we got hammered 7-0 we just wanted to restore a bit of pride and role our sleeves up a little bit, which we did.

“Corsham had to work for their three points.

“Jordan (Matthews) is a young lad and he ran out of steam a little bit in the second half but he gives us a different option up font.

“We have been looking for a striker all season and the early signs are good.

“We have another tough game this weekend at Oldland Abbotonians so again it will be tin hats on and roll the sleeves up.

“It is going to be tough now for the rest of the season and it is hard to see where the next win is coming from but we just have to keep plugging away.”
