MELKSHAM Town played their ‘get out of jail card’ on Saturday as they came away 2-1 winners over Welton Rovers, despite an under-par performance.

Will Stead put Melksham ahead in the first half with a spectacular strike before missing several chances.

Welton brought the game back level on the stroke of half-time when the ball struck the hand of Dave Thompson in the box.

The hosts then scored the winner deep into time added on when Ben Thomson found the back of the net to stretch Melksham’s unbeaten run to four games.

“I think we probably used our get out of jail card on Saturday,” said manager Darren Perrin.

“Without question that was out worst performance of the season and we won.

“First half we were dominant and we probably should have been three or four goals clear.

“Welton somewhat fortunately scored a penalty right on half-time, but then all credit to them in the second half, they played very well and we were very poor.

“We were hanging on at times, but all credit to the players as we hung in there and scored the winner in the 93rd minute.

“We are unbeaten in four now and it says something about the team that we can grind out wins when we are nowhere near the level we are used to playing at.”

Melksham now face bottom-of-the-league Clevedon Town, who are yet to record a win in their opening eight games, but Perrin is expecting a difficult game.

“We just lost that spark on Saturday and we will look to put that right on the training ground this week,” added Perrin.

“It is another tough game. They are starting to pick up and make a couple of signings.

“If we go with the attitude and the complacency that we did on Saturday then we will come unstuck.

“If we play to our full capabilities then I expect us to come away with the win.”
