DEVIZES Town could find themselves in hot water with the Toolstation League following their ‘no-show’ last weekend.

On Saturday, Devizes were due to make a round trip of over 250 miles to take on the First Division champions, who were being presented with the trophy, but after informing Barnstaple that their bus had broken down near Bristol at 12.30pm, they were unable to arrange alternative transport.

The home side were then unable to contact any representatives from Nursteed Road and the match was called off at around 3.30pm.

League general secretary Mark Edmonds was at the ground for the trophy presentation and confirmed that Devizes could face punishment for not turning up.

He told the North Devon Journal: “We are very disappointed with Devizes Town's no-show.

“It is totally unacceptable at this level of football. It's not what the Western League is about.

“I feel very sorry for all these wonderful supporters who have turned up, the players and manager Barry (Yeo, Barnstaple manager) who has worked all season for this award.

“It will now go back to the board of directors, who will come to a decision (regarding any punishment for Devizes).”

Saturday’s postponement means that the fixture is the final outstanding match in the First Division schedule but Edmonds says that the game may not be re-played.

He added: “Whether the game will be played is another matter, as the league has already been won and it has no bearing on the league table. That will be a board decision, hopefully in the next couple of days.”

Devizes refused to comment when contacted by the Gazette & Herald.
