DEVIZES Town joint-boss Justin Webster thought that his team should have been spared a journey to county rivals Warminster Town last weekend.

Devizes’ game at Weymouth Street looked in doubt on Saturday morning as the wet weather battered Warminster’s playing surface but the clash did get underway, with the home side going a goal up through Tom Golledge.

But after the visitors’ Kris Beasley hobbled off with a hamstring injury, the referee opted to abandon the clash, leaving Webster wishing that his team had been spared the trouble.

“Chippenham Town’s game was called off at 9 o’clock and all the other local games fell by the wayside after that, so you thought it wasn’t going to happen,” said the Devizes joint-manager.

“Warminster tweeted a picture of their pitch in the morning and it looked covered in water. When we got there, the referee didn’t really want to let the game go ahead but he said that he’d let us try to play if we wanted, which was fair enough.

“Obviously, we can’t be too disappointed about it getting called off because we were losing but it’s just a shame that common sense didn’t prevail – I had to drive an hour from Swindon to get there and it probably shouldn’t have been played.

“We’ve lost our captain because he’s pulled his hamstring and he’s going to be out for two or three weeks now.”

However, last weekend’s raft of postponements in the Toolstation League First Division has handed Devizes the chance to play party-poopers next weekend when they host Welton Rovers.

The Somerset side were due to celebrate their 3000th consecutive game in the league against Wells City but will instead reach their landmark at Nursteed Road on Saturday.
