A LAST-GASP penalty saw Wootton Bassett Town slip to a 2-1 defeat at Ardley United on Tuesday night.
Paul Braithwaite’s side took an early lead through top-scorer Dan Bailey but the Oxfordshire hosts restored parity in the second period before firing home the winner from the spot to break Bassett hearts.
On Saturday, Braithwaite’s men needed a late spot-kick of their own to battle past Wiltshire League Wroughton on the Wiltshire Senior Cup.
Bassett were pushed all the way, playing for around 70 minutes with 10 men after Nathan Gambling picked up a second booking midway through the second half for his part in an ugly melee sparked by a hefty challenge on George Drewitt, despite the striker protesting his innocence.
But deep into the second half of extra-time, Wroughton keeper Kurtis Sharkey claimed that he was being held by Bassett’s Nathan Hawkins and tossed the visiting defender to the ground, receiving a straight red for his troubles and allowing the visitors’ Steve Yeardley to fire home the winner from the penalty spot.
