POTTERNE got back to winning ways on Saturday as they defeated Bridgwater by four wickets.

After seeing their game with local rivals Corsham washed out a fortnight ago, Neil Clark’s side suffered a four-wicket loss at Bristol last weekend.

However, after the making the trip to Somerset this weekend, they got back on track and avenged the reverse that they suffered on the opening day of the Premier One campaign at the Grove.

“When I look back, when we played them then, we were on top for 90 per cent of the match and I’d say that we played better than we did on Saturday,” Potterne skipper Clark said, whose side are sitting fourth in the table.

“I think the difference now is that we have belief (in ourselves) because we didn’t really know what to expect (in this division after coming up last season).

“On our day, we have shown that we are capable of beating anyone at this level.

“The pitch on Saturday wasn’t a great cricket wicket and they probably got 20 or so more runs than they should have done.

“We lost a few early wickets but a few partnerships at the end helped us get back to winning ways.”

The hosts won the toss and elected to bat, and Potterne were indebted to the bowling of Ed Young to help dismiss Bridgwater for 159 in the 48th over, with the new Wiltshire skipper claiming 3-22 from his 10 overs.

However, the visitors’ reply got off to a shaky start, with Luke De Souza, Young and Andrew Woodward all back in the hutch having failed to get into double figures, while wicketkeeper Tom Cullen managed to score 28 as Potterne stuttered to 59-4.

Clark and Moin Ashraf shared a fifth-wicket stand of 60 to steer the away side back on track before Joshua De Souza and Ashraf secured the win in the 33rd over.

Potterne host struggling Taunton St Andrew on Saturday, with games against leaders Frocester and high-flying Bath to follow in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, Corsham could not get over the finishing line in their tied match with Bath.

Ashur Morrison’s men posted 245-5 from their 50 overs at Station Road, with Mike Coles blasting 99 from 72 balls, hitting four fours and 10 sixes, and opener Steve Bullen scoring 71.

Bath got their reply off to a fine start with a 78-run opening wicket stand, but five quick wickets saw them slump to 115-5.

The game swung back Bath’s way with 45-run partnership for the sixth wicket, the visitors finishing the game 245-9 with Coles, James Arney and Joe King all picking up two wickets apiece.
