DAVE GODWIN and Kyle Anderson will be Wootton Bassett’s two representatives in the national singles and junior singles (U25s) respectively at the men’s county finals at Devizes on the weekend of September 5-6.

Both produced fine performances last Sunday at Westlecot in the semi-finals to book their finals places at Devizes and also secure a place in the national championships at Royal Leamington Spa next month.

Godwin beat Tom Warner 21-14 in his singles semi-final while Anderson came from 9-1 down at six ends to beat Gary Jackson (Westlecot) in the U25 junior singles semi-final.

After a good start Godwin led Amesbury’s Tom Warner 7-3 after eight ends and 10-7 at 12 but lost the next four to trail 12-10 at 16. However, he hit back with a three and edged away to win 21-14 on the 24th end.

He will play Mel Biggs (Westlecot) in the final who beat Andy Colebrooke (Spencer Moulton) 21-16.

Anderson made a disastrous start and was 9-1 down at six ends but he had restored parity at 10-10 on the 12th end. He then edged ahead but was pegged back to 14-14 at 17 ends before moving 20-14 up after 20 ends before finally winning 21-18.

Anderson will meet Craig Hatherall (Westlecot) in the final.

But there was no joy for the Bassett pairing of Chris Cheesley and Neil Smith in the men’s county pairs semi-final despite leading Middleton Cup players Russell Francis and Graham Shadwell (Spencer Moulton, BoA) 10-3 after nine ends and 13-9 at 14.

The Moulton players won the next three to move ahead for the first time 15-13. Bassett rallied to draw level 15-15 at 19 ends but lost out on the last end 17-16.

They will meet Holt's Ben Gadd and Ken Rowden, in for the unavailable Justin Davis, who beat Amesbury's Mike Tyler and Mickey Crook 22-11.

WILTSHIRE men have won their west group in the Middleton Cup for the fifth year in a row and reached the quarter-finals in the inter-county championship once again.

They meet arch rivals Devon, winners of the other west group, in the quarter-finals on Saturday on the neutral green at West Backwell Bowls Club, North Somerset (2pm).

This will be the third year in a row that the two counties will have clashed in the quarter-finals with honours even at 1-1.

Devon took the spoils in 2013 when winning 129-110 but Wiltshire gained sweet revenge last July with a brilliant late charge for a 117-109 victory at West Backwell and reach the semi-finals.

Wiltshire will be looking for similar fortunes on Saturday against Devon to reach the last four in the Middleton Cup and book a place in the showplace inter-county semis at Royal Leamington Spa on the first day of the month long national championships on Saturday, August 1.

Wiltshire will field exactly the same side and rink line-ups that thrashed Somerset 133-98 in their last group match to set-up the meeting with Devon in the quarter-finals.

This season Wiltshire have only used 25 players in their Middleton Cup campaign and on a few occasions have just tweeked the positional places in the six rinks.

Meanwhile skips Neil Smith (Wootton Bassett) and Mel Biggs (Westlecot) are unbeaten with four wins each, while Holt’s Ben Gadd and England international Graham Shadwell have three wins each.
