DAVE Turner is feeling sorry for the players of Ascot United after they were forced to turn up at Rylands Way for Tuesday night’s postponed clash.

Bassett held a pitch inspection at 3pm with the match referee but were left shocked when the official refused to postpone the clash until shortly before kick-off.

“It was a farce – I spoke to my groundsman in the morning, who told me it wouldn’t be playable, and the match referee was the only person who thought it could be played,” said Bassett boss Turner.

“We wanted to let Ascot know so they didn’t have to travel but when I turned up at half 6, as normal, parts of the pitch were under water.

“We only had to go back to Swindon but it was a fair way for their lads.”

On Saturday, Ethan Delaney netted a stoppage time equaliser to save the day for Bassett against local rivals Shrivenham.

“From what I’ve heard, it was a typical local derby,” said Turner, who was away for last weekend’s clash.

“You tell everybody to play their usual game but when everyone knows each other, that never happens.”
