DEVIZES Town could go second in the table this weekend with victory over Oldland Abbotonians and assistant manager James Dore said promotion may not be such an unlikely scenario for the Nursteed Road club.

James Lewis and Darren Smart scored as Devizes maintained their sensational form with their 11th straight win at Shrewton United on Tuesday night.

On Saturday, Lewis was also on target as Mark Love’s side beat previous third place occupants Bridport.

“The lads were tremendous (against Shrewton) and because some of them play Sunday football too, it was their third game in four days,” said Dore.

“It really showed the character of the team and it’s great that the lads keep on going at the end of games, instead of just settling for a point.

“We’ve said to the boys that 11 straight wins is fantastic at any level, whether you’re playing in the Premier League or the Toolstation League.

“When we started off, we would have been happy with fifth from bottom, and then it changed to mid-table, but now we’re in the mix at the top and the other teams around us are dropping points.

“It’s exciting for the boys and we’ve got 11 games left – if we could win eight or nine of them then we’ll be right up there.”

Top scorer Blaine Fitzgerald is set to miss this weekend’s trip to second-placed Oldland while midfielder Steve Bunting is set for scans on a knee injury and could face a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
