CHIPPENHAM loanee Jack McKenna wouldn’t mind extending his loan period at Hardenhuish Park, after impressing so far in his one-month spell with the Bluebirds.

The 19-year-old midfielder scored his first senior goal in last week’s Red Insure Cup victory over Salisbury City and has already increased his loan by a further month after Adie Mings’ side saw all of December’s fixtures fall foul of the big freeze, the Bristol Rovers youngster originally joining in November.

But with Dave Penney replacing Paul Trollope as Rovers boss earlier this month, McKenna admits that a February return to the Memorial Stadium isn’t set in stone.

“I’m here until the end if the month but hopefully there’ll be something after that – I’m not sure what’s happening with the new manager,” said McKenna.

“I came through the U18 system at Bristol Rovers and I’m a first-year pro this year. They haven’t really got a reserve team going so in terms of men’s football, this is all I’ve had so far.

“It’s been good. I’m glad to be getting some games, to be around a team and there’s a good atmosphere here. I want to keep playing and keep doing well.

“Once you come through as a youngster, you have to do something special to get straight into the first-team and going out on loan is all about learning your trade.

“A few of the players who’ve come through have gone out on loan and played games, so it’s just about getting the match fitness and hopefully doing something back there.”

Chippenham boss Mings will look into the possibility of extending McKenna’s loan deal.

“We’ll be following that up and see if we can get Jack for another month,” said Mings.

“Obviously, we don’t know if Rovers want to get him back so the new manager can have a look at him, so we’ll see.

“He’s done well for us – not the finished article, but he’s got a fantastic attitude, works hard and adds something to the team.”
