MARK Love has targeted a serious tilt at cup glory as Devizes Town seek a silver lining to a remarkable season.

The Nursteed Road men claimed their eighth win in a row in all competitions with a 5-1 destruction of Toolstation League First Division rivals Hengrove Athletic in the Les Phillips League Cup on Tuesday night.

Former Shrivenham boss Love has overseen an astonishing turnaround in the club’s fortunes since taking over in October when the club were no-hopers with just two wins in their opening 10 league matches.

One defeat in 11 has taken them to the brink of the top four but the manager admits his men probably have too much ground to make up on the top three of Merthyr, Oldland Abbotonians and Bridport.

But Love believes the cup offers Devizes the chance to get something tangible from a campaign that has gathered so much pace.

“This is a big cup and we have got a good enough squad here now to put up a good fight in it,’’ said the manager.

“We have to go and play Odd Down away in the next round now and that’s a good test for this team, to see where we are and what we still need to work on.

“We’ll be the underdogs, but we can give it a good go “We’ve done really well in the league and are really climbing up the table, but the top three are probably just a little too far in front for us to have any impact there.’’
