Wootton Bassett manager Paul Burke is refusing to let his injury worries get him down, insisting that a 1-0 win against Marlborough Town in the Wiltshire Senior Cup highlights the squad's strength in depth.

Bassett were without six of the players who started Wednesday 's Floodlit Cup win over Almondsbury, but Lee Stoddart's goal was enough to see them get through the first round of this competition.

Burke, pictured, said: "Considering what we had out it was one of those games where we would have taken any sort of a win.

"We were really down to the bare bones. It wasn't pretty but we ground out the win. But it's our third win on the bounce so I can't complain too much.

"We've got a very good squad and this shows how many quality players we've got.

"There's some good young lads coming through and we've come on a huge amount from where we were two weeks ago.

"The spirit in the squad is great and it is now up to us to take this cup form back into the league."

Marlborough almost took the lead on 15 minutes but Dwayne Henry blazed over the bar.

Nine minutes later Steve Yeardley should have put Bassett in front but his powerful header was cleared off the line.

Stoddart finally broke the deadlock in the 29th minute, capitalising on a collision between Ryan Keeley and Marlborough keeper Dan Fry to tap in from 15 yards.

Both sides had chances in the second half, but failed to take them, and Bassett were grateful to keeper John Haines, who ensured the victory in the closing minutes when he tipped a cross-shot over the bar.

Marlborough manager Adam Wainwright praised his players for their performance and said: "We missed a one-on-one with the keeper and looked just a s good as them for long periods."

Purton's dreams of cup success in the competition are over as they were given a torrid time by Westbury United, eventually falling to a 6-0 defeat away from home.

Wroughton kept the flag flying for the Wiltshire League clubs with a comfortable 4-1 away victory over Wessex League side Amesbury Town.

Wroughton boss Mark Love said: "It was the best we have played all season. It was a top performance and no one would have thought we came from a league below Amesbury."

Robin Grey gave the Swindon side the lead after 15 minutes, the home side equalising shortly after.

Barry Dickens spotted the keeper off his line and his long-distance lob regained the lead for the visitors.

A well worked move finished off by Stuart Temple gave Wroughton a two-goal cushion at the break and Dickens made sure of victory by adding a fourth.

Westside were beaten 1-0 by Devizes Town but made the home side pull out all the stops with manager Mark Simpkins saying his side were unlucky losers.

"Their goal was definitely handball," he said. "Their player admitted it after the game. Our lads were superb, I was proud of them all."

New College failed to raise their game and were second best against visitors Cricklade Town who ran out 3-0 winners courtesy of two good headers from Max Lesley and a strike from Joe Dorey.

Aldbourne were beaten 4-0 at Warminster and Calne Town beat AFC Trowbridge Youth by the same score, Glenn Armstrong (3) and Gary Banks scoring for the home side.

Also in the Wiltshire Senior Cup, Malmesbury Victoria ran out 3-1 winners at home to Bromham, while Blueprint Senior lost 2-0 to Trowbridge Town.
