EDF Energy Vase, second round

Jon Clarke hailed his side's fantastic first half performance as Wootton Bassett progressed to the third round of the EDF Trophy.

It was the first time the sides had met in four years, but there was no room for pleasentries as Bassett raced into a 21-5 half-time lead thanks to a superb attacking display.

They took their foot off the pedal after the break and let Swindon have a look in, but by then the result was already beyond doubt.

Bassett vice-captain Clarke said: "We did what we've been doing recently - we dropped off a bit in the second half and let them get back in it.

"We weren't helped by a couple of sin-bins which meant we were down to 13 men at one stage. But in reality it was never close.

"We were fantastic in the first half and they couldn't live with us."

Bassett attacked the visitors from the off and opened the scoring when scrum-half Craig Iles touched down with a pick and drive, which was converted.

From the restart they continued the onslaught and when Karl Brant offloaded to fellow centre Tim Gallimore he was left with the simple task of racing away under the posts for another converted try.

It wasn't long before Gallimore exploited a gap in the Swindon defence to go over for his second, which was duly converted.

With half-time approaching the visitors got their first points on the board.

A penalty was kicked to the corner, where their big pack prevailed with a catch and drive, but they were unable to add the extras.

Bassett begun the second half well with two unconverted tries as Neil Smith touched down in the corner and then prop Mark Roshier bundled his way over the line.

However, poor discipline at the breakdown saw them reduced to 13 men soon after and Swindon capitalised.

They scored two unconverted tries of their own, but it was too little too late as Bassett march on in the Trophy.
