SWINDON Town boss Phil Brown is hopeful of confirming two further signings ahead of next weekend’s trip to Lincoln City.

Five summer recruits were handed a starting spot during Saturday’s spectacular League Two opening day clash against Macclesfield Town, a game in which two late Michael Doughty penalties secured Swindon an unlikely win having trailed by a goal five minutes into injury time.

But off the field, Brown has his eyes on one defender and another player in an unspecified position.

The 59-year-old hopes to have both men tied down to a contract ahead of his side’s second League Two fixture against the Imps, although the Town boss admits competition for starting spots in the first team is already pleasing him.

He said: “I’ve still got to bring a couple more players in, one being a defender and add a bit of steel to the side.

“I thought the new players did well. Martin Smith in the first half particularly grabbed hold of the game and did what I asked him to do. Jak McCourt and Toumani Diagouraga can both play where Martin is, so there’s a bit of pressure on him.

“Elijah (Adebayo) was under pressure from minute one, especially now Marc Richards is back on the training ground.

“But Marc’s return resulted in a different response from him. I though he played well and held the ball up well.

“When he went down, I thought that was the end of him, but he refused to stay down and actually got the penalty which we then equalised from.”

One of Brown’s summer recruits, Doughty, impressed most when bagging a match-winning hat-trick on his return to the Energy Check County Ground having last featured in red in January 2017.

Doughty’s actions from 12 yards on two occasions deep into injury time earned the Swindon squad a weekend of rest, as Brown admitted a long video session was planned prior to Town’s late heroics.

He added: “Michael has got more nerves than I have, I didn’t watch either of the penalties.

“It takes a lot of bottle, especially when you know there are three points on the line and it’s the first game of the season.

“The most important thing wasn’t the hat-trick, but the three points secured.

“With 90 minutes on the clock, I’m bringing the boys in on Sunday for a video session.

“Then 99 minutes in, we’re having the weekend off.

“Video sessions will be important, especially after running around in Saturday’s heat.

“Players need that relaxation time.”
